Brooke Weeber is a Portland-based illustrator who brings whimsical, nature-based scenes to life. Her complex pieces combine animals with instruments, ribbons with clouds and always feature her iconic subtle color palate and playful aesthetic. Brooke finds her inspiration from various natural landscapes as well as Greek and Native American culture. She started drawing when she was a young thing, but started focusing on it in high school and later in college. After receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Oregon in 2003, Brooke flew her native Northwest for the big city, where she focused on her other passion – professional baking. She received a degree in Professional Pastry Baking at the French Culinary Institute of New York in 2005 and worked as a high-end cake decorator immediately. Craving more trees and more drawing space, Brooke packed up her apartment and re-rooted herself in Portland in 2009. She’s been cranking out pieces ever since and has had shows locally at Mississippi Studios, the Farm, and Tribute Gallery. She’s pleased as punch to be on her bike, thinking of pictures and what kind of cake to make for her next friend’s birthday.

Redux Presents – NOCTURNAL: Life in Darkness

“SKULLS, BOTANY, AND BATS: JOURNEY THROUGH NATURE’S DARKNESS AT PORTLAND’S REDUX GALLERY”

Nocturnal: Life In Darkness
May 7th-June 3rd, 2010

PORTLAND, OR–– Nocturnal: Life in Darkness, is the collaboration between acclaimed Illustrator Nicomi “Nix” Turner and Painter Justin Barry. Inspired by what takes place when the sun goes down, Nocturnal is a fascinating glance into the world at night and those who dwell in it’s shadows as well as interpreting ‘Night-Nature’ through the eyes of its inhabitants.

The unexplained recent decline in numerous bat colonies, an unseen key to many eco-structures, compelled Barry to not only paint but adopt, and donate his efforts to supporting the re-balance of a much needed part of dusk’s landscapes.
“A larger part of this show, a met idealism, is to capture something that we must all realize and recognize will not be around forever.” Nicomi says, speaking of her use of conversing flora and fauna. “We both have an undying respect for the literal and non literal darkness which we represent with
‘Nocturnal’.”

In this collection, Turner’s meticulously detailed dark botanical realism joins with Barry’s dreamlike story-telling, captured in dusk’s Urban landscapes. The result is a visually captivating display between contrasting palettes and engrossing textures, encouraging visitor to explore the collection in new ways and to question their impact on the night and those non-human dwellers.
