Mike Crocker Solo Exhibition at the NW Center For Photography

five portals toward negation by Mike Crocker
From September through October the NW Center For Photography will feature Portland Artist, Mike Crocker, for a solo exhibition entitled, “Cataclysm Conditioning.” This show will be comprised of thirty four startling images that explore the central theme of impermanence. One of his primary intentions with this imagery is to capture sights typically considered banal or grotesque, and present them in a manner that instead arrests and entices the eye. A slideshow of complimentary images will also be on display at the opening as well as a companion book of photos to be made available in conjunction with the exhibit.

Photographic exhibition Garden of Eden by Andrzej Maciejewski in the Camerawork Gallery

Garden Of Eden by Maciejewski
An interesting photographic exhibition titled “Garden of Eden”, by Polish/Canadian artist Andrzej Maciejewski, will take place in the Camerawork Gallery in Portland, Oregon from August 20th to September 23rd, 2011.

Garden of Eden is a series of still-life photographs, inspired by classic old masters paintings, but showing our modern fruits and vegetables from supermarkets, with PLU stickers or plastic wraps on them. This project is an invitation to the reflection on our attitude towards the nature, on the direction in which our civilization is going and on our way of looking at the reality.

One of the interesting features of the project is the mixture of modern and traditional (or even outdated techniques) that were used to realize it. The photographs were taken with 4×5 view camera on colour transparencies and developed in the darkroom. After that they were scanned and the prints for an exhibition were printed using Epson Chrome K3 technology. For lighting the artist used old-type tungsten lights, instead of so popular softbox.

“Garden of Eden” was completed in 2011 and realized thanks to the support of the Ontario Arts Council Grant. It was shortlisted in this year’s edition of Sony World Photo Awards (still-life category) and featured in several art magazines. Chosen images were presented so far at the group exhibitions in London, UK and New York, US. The solo show in Camerawork Gallery inaugurates the world tour of the project. In December this year it will be presented in the Contemporary Art Center in Las Vegas, NV and then in several other galleries in US, Canada and Europe.

Art on Alberta’s Red Rover mobile art gallery makes its debut on Alberta Street with photographs from artist Lauren Grube

Join Art on Alberta in welcoming its mobile art gallery, a 1960’s teardrop trailer dubbed
Red Rover, during June’s Last Thursday event on Northeast Alberta Street. Each month the
trailer will present works from local artists. This month’s featured artist, Lauren Grube, will showcase
photographs and a nature installation in the unique space on public display through July 2011.

Looking through the gallery windows at her installation, Ms. Grube hopes you will examine
your ongoing interaction with nature, yet momentarily within the confines of a metal trailer.
The gallery may be seen on Thursday, June 30, 2011 from 5:00 to 9:00pm at 2715 Northeast
Alberta Street in front of Binks Bar. Thereafter, the exhibit may be seen through July 26 on
Northeast 19th Avenue between Going and Wygant Streets.

Art on Alberta plans to bring the trailer to educational locations around the Alberta Arts District and the
broader Portland arts community. We are happy to have Red Rover used as an installation space, a gallery,
a tool for art education, and a vehicle to bring art to the community in an unconventional way. Please visit
www.artonalberta.org or contact us at info@artonalberta.org to learn more about Art on Alberta and
discover how you can engage with the organization. For information about exhibiting in the Red Rover gallery,
contact: Alice Orleman and Susannah Kelly at exhibitions@artonalberta.org.

How the West Was One

FIFTY24PDX Gallery is proud to present, “HOW THE WEST WAS ONE,” featuring photographs from Estevan Oriol (Los Angeles), Megan McIsaac (Portland), and Austin McManus (San Francisco). For this show, each photographer represents their city, the style and content unique to artist and landscape. What links these three disparate artists is residing on the West Coast, and the medium by which they express themselves and reflect what they see around them.

Estevan Oriol began his career in the entertainment industry in the late 1980′s as a club bouncer at Los Angeles’ most popular Hip Hop clubs and infamous Hollywood hangouts. It was there that Estevan first linked up with his Soul Assassin brothers from South Gate, Cypress Hill. Eager to expand his knowledge of the business, Estevan secured a job as tour manager for the rap group, House of Pain, in 1992.
Estevan invoked his unique photography style to catalog the outrageous experiences he had on tour and began taking pictures of his neighborhood homies and the low rider culture. He had a gift for capturing the raw essence of street life through his photography. Within a short time, he became one of the most sought after photographers of the Urban and Hip Hop community. His work has been featured in magazines world-wide including: COMPLEX, FHM, GQ, Flaunt, Details, Vibe, The Fader, and Rolling Stone.
In 2006, Estevan teamed up with clothing powerhouse, Upper Playground, noted leader in specialty artists’ inspired t-shirt lines. Estevan’s line expresses his photography on limited edition t-shirts. In its 5 season, the line and its following continues to grow at a tremendous rate.
Today, in addition to being CEO of Joker Brand Clothing and his full time career as a photographer, Estevan directs music videos for groups including Eminem, Cypress Hill, D12, Linkin Park, Blink 182, Paul Wall, P.O.D., and Xzibit. He devised shooting campaigns for Nike, Rockford Fosgate, and Cadillac. He has directed new media projects for My Cadillac stories, MTV, and Apple Computer.

Megan McIsaac lives in Portland Oregon, by way of Metro-Detroit, Michigan.
“I have never once felt as though I have belonged somewhere or have belonged with someone or some people… I don’t feel a sense of belonging. I have never been part of a clique or a group of friends and best friends have come and gone. If I am a good photographer, it is because I am an observer. I have always been the observer.”
- Megan McIsaac

“In addition to curating his monthly show at Free Gold Watch, editing books for Gingko Press, and running the always spectacular FlopBox, San Francisco resident Austin McManus also happens to be one hell of a photographer. Capturing a great shot is often times simply a matter of statistical probabilities combined with just being in the right place at the right time. A great photographer isn’t one who is lucky enough to catch the great shot, but rather one who can express an individual voice, define a moment in time, and serialize these events in a unique and inspired manner” -Hi-Fructose Magazine
