Studies of waves and time: paintings by Robert Bickel

Waves by Robert Bickel
The accidental laws of physics, the absoluteness of time, behind everything lies concealed an elegant mathematical formula. The world we see is but a convenient and simplistic approximation, it’s true nature only revealed in riddles and abstractions. It is from this perspective and a history in architectural design that Robert draws inspiration.

As for the subject of the ocean wave, it represents not just physical beauty and force but also a progression in time; a long languid journey from afar, a chaotic deconstruction… then nonexistence.

And as for the subject of “time” itself — an abstraction as omnipotent and poorly understood as this is surely a subject deserving artistic reflection, even if fully unresolved.

Year of The Rabbit

year of the rabbit by neil m. perry
A solo-show of new work by Neil M. Perry at Screaming Sky Gallery (1416 NE Alberta St.)

2011 has been the year of the Rabbit. In my most recent series of drawings and paintings the White Emperor watches over his Kingdom and the recently deposed wolves are banished to the dark outer-reaches.
We live in a complex world that has a skewed perception of meritocracy and occasionally no use for it at all. Tyrannical oligarchy has replaced democracy and the decisions that affect our lives are being heavily influenced, if not decided absolutely, by the super rich. Elected officials are a puppet show and it appears we may have been safer running with wolves than sitting among the rabbits. Art reflecting life, whatever next?

Liminal Suspension

Gallery 114 is pleased to present Liminal Suspension, an exhibition of new work by Alaina Dias Lara, and featuring installation work by Tyler Stuart. Please join us on Thursday, December 1, from 6-9 p.m., for the exhibition opening and to meet the artist. We are pleased to take part in “First Thursday” festivities, previewing art exhibitions showing at the downtown Portland, Oregon art galleries. The show will be on display from December 1-30th, 2011. Gallery 114 is located at 1100 NW Glisan, Portland, Oregon 97209. The reception is free and open to the public.

Alaina Dias Lara is a visionary painter who explores the inner layers of human emotions and subliminal symbolism. Her work reflects the encounters and movement of her childhood, from her rich sense of color to the emotions hidden beneath.Tyler Stuart is a local artist whose work examines the corporeal and metaphysical relationship between the mind, materials, and environment.

Alaina Dias Lara holds a MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College in Vermont and a BFA in painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. Originally from Northern California, Alaina lives and works in Portland, OR.

Tyler Stuart is a local artist whose work examines the corporeal and metaphysical relationship between the mind, materials, and environment. Through poetic and meditative compositions, he incorporates familiar materials such as wood, metal, and stone to reveal the tension between what is observed and what is presumed. In Liminal Suspension, Tyler will select particular materials to activate the object, moment, and space revealing strengths and weaknesses of both the surface and interior.

Tyler Stuart received his MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland and a BFA in Painting from University of Oregon in Eugene. Tyler proudly works and lives in Portland.

Gallery 114 is the only established gallery in Portland that has persisted in allowing its artists absolute artistic freedom throughout its 20-year history. Founded in 1990 as an artist collective, Gallery 114 and its members have consistently produced a diversity of artwork.

act Naturally with BT LivermoreOn First Thursday, October 6th, BT Livermore will open his show, Act Naturally, a collection of cartoonish and typographic paintings on found wood, using (mostly) found paint. An America Where This Makes Sense at Gigantic Gallery
Gigantic gallery is proud to announce our September show: _An America Where This Makes Sense_ by Brooks Cashbaugh. The opening reception starts at 5:30, September 1, and the show will run through October 2, 2011.

Brooks paints figures from the canon of American tradition in a highly kinetic, expressionistic style. Flappers, astronauts, greasers, grifters, housewives, cowboys, carnies — his characters inhabit a fever dream terrain at the nexus of myth, memory, abstraction and hallucination. He paints with oil and acrylic on canvas and clear mylar. His pieces are grand in both size and scope.

Brooks currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana. He studied political science and painting at Indiana University, and currently works at the campus gallery. He has won numerous awards and scholarships, and has most recently shown work at the Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago.

He will be driving across the country to join us for this show. We hope you’ll come make sense of it all with us.

Joshua Mays & Meagan Spendlove @ Backspace Gallery, July 7th

First Thursday, July 7th, 2011 @ Backspace Gallery
We are proud to have 2 amazing artists showing work at the gallery!

Joshua Mays, originally from Denver, Co. but has been a nomadic artist for sometime now.
He has an eye for the balance of realistic characters, mixed with abstract and other worldly flow like no other!
Doing a range from canvas work, to album covers, to murals and much more… his vision is in full blast, and not stopping any time soon.

Meagan Spendlove is from San Francisco. You might know of her thru her graffiti moniker Siloette.
She has the smoothest flow of color and line work, almost looking like stained glass at times.
Strong emotional Characters dance between organic shapes and color, creating a color explosion for the senses.

both will be showing new paintings at the gallery, and we’ve got some plans for a wall or 2 to be hit during their visit!

*Both artists will be in attendance.

This is one not to miss portland!!
