when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
sunburned snowblind eyeballs

when i say darkness…
until the light takes us

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
both are equally necessary. That was the whole idea behind my “shit is not all good” thing

name:
nicole linde

when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
sunshine, starlight, fire, life force, consciousness

when i say darkness…
mysterious, wormholes, subconscious, deep sea

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
both, and in relation to each other

name:
jon macnair

when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
color, shiny, intelligence, moon and stars, reflective

when i say darkness…
quiet, nightmare, solitude, meditative, the unknown

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
darkness

name:
ryan thompson

when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
intellect, light, illumination

when i say darkness…
shadow, void, emptiness

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
brightness

name:
robert bowen

when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
vivid colors, an intelligent person worth talking to, what you see when you jump to light speed in the Millennium Falcon

when i say darkness…
I think more of a mood rather than a lack of color

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
oddly, I like both. my work has been described as brightly colored darkness

name:
natalie phillips

when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
intensity, color, aggression

when i say darkness…
silence, peace, depth

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
i would rather take a nap on a south facing hill

name:
rebecca artemisa

when i say brightness… what comes to mind?
light on water, little saint halos, birthday cake icing, sun behind clouds, ghosts!

when i say darkness…
i will need a flashlight

what’s your preference, brightness or darkness?
i prefer to have a light in the dark, so i suppose brightness

Hot One Inch Action :: the Button Art Show

Conceived by Jim Hoehnle and Chris Bentzen in 2004, Hot One Inch Action is the original, one-night only show of button art, music and social interaction in Vancouver, BC. The original work of fifty different artists is presented on one inch buttons. These one inch buttons are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy randomly selected buttons in mixed bags of five for $5. If the bag purchased does not have the desired button, trade with the people around you. How bad do you want that button?! That’s when the hot action starts.

This Fall, in addition to our regular Vancouver show, we’re bringing the hot action to Seattle and Portland.

Portland’s Hot One Inch Action is Thursday November 11, 2010 (8-11pm) at Backspace (115 NW 5th Ave, Portland OR). Featuring button art from APAK, Amy Jenkins, Amy Ruppel, Anna Magruder, Audrey McNamara, Brian Bump, Bryan Sculthorpe, Charlie Alan Kraft, Chris Haberman, Chrissy Ortez, Dan Osterman, Danielle Weiss, David Herrick, Erik Heumiller, Erin Nations, Erinn Hatter, Gabriel Amadeus, Griffon Jillson, Hadley Hutton, Ian Anderson, Jackie Dives, Jackson Smith, James Baker, Jennifer Mercede, Jenn Woodward, Jesse Narens, Jesse Reno, Kaitlin Sambrooke, Karl Edwards, Kasey Tararuj, Kelly Williams, Klutch, Lida Avery, Martin A. Eggiman Jr, Matt O. Cosby, Melissa Levin, Nathan Parr, Neil M. Perry, Nicole Linde, Randall Foster, Richard Schemmerer, Robert Oreo, Rory Phillips, Santiago Uceda, Sasha, Friedman, SD Elliott, Sean Lanusse, Skye Blue, Tara Stansberry, and Zhoh Autrite Mauw.

Micro Brood – A holiday group show featuring Portland artists

Screaming Sky Gallery on Alberta is bringing Portland artists together this holiday season.

Opening on November 26th, 2010 and showing throughout December, Micro Brood is a group exhibition with a roster to get hot and bothered about in the midst of the cold Northwest winter.

Featuring new works from Portland artists such as Jackie Avery, Brin Levinson, Guy Burwell, J. Shea, Jamie Paul, Josh “f+” Pearce, BoRo, Justin Aerni, Nikki Peterson, Filth, Kalina Torino, Lea Barozzi, Tripper Dungan, Jack Pollock and Klutch the exhibition will showcase the creativity of the city’s low brow and new brow artists.

According to gallery owner Andria Robbins the purpose of the show is: “to shine a spotlight on a select group of artists working in Portland and offer our customers a wide variety of contemporary art.”

The scope of the show will encompass illustration, painting, photography and collectible toys from some exciting members of the local art scene including long term residents and recent transplants.

Neil M. Perry arrived in Portland just six months ago and is already finding the artist community to be welcoming and creative; “I’m thrilled to be a part of this exhibition at Screaming Sky, it’s a great space and the artists they show are of excellent caliber. Having been here a relatively short amount of time I feel lucky to be involved.”

Screaming Sky Gallery is located at 1416 NE Alberta Street, Portland, Oregon and is open Tuesday through Friday 1:30-7, Saturday 11-7 and Sunday 11:30-5pm.

The Last of the Vinyl Killers at The Goodfoot

Vinyl Killers 8 opens on October 28th
The Goodfoot
2845 SE Stark St.
Portland, Oregon
open daily from 4 PM to 2:30 AM.  The show will be up until Nov 30th, 2010.There will also be vinyl only selections from dj’s monkeytek, ryan organ and samizdat during the opening

The often imitated, never duplicated, OG vinyl art show, Vinyl Killers returns this October for another round of rescuing long forgotten records from the world’s landfills. This year there have been at least 6 other vinyl shows in North America alone and interest in the art form is at an all time high. After seven annual shows and several touring exhibits Vinyl Killers remains committed to staying open call, independent, D-I-Y, and free of corporate sponsorship.

Since it’s inception in 2003 Vinyl Killers has showcased well over 1000 records painted by artists from around the world. A quick glance at the VK website shows both the genres global influence and the absolutely amazing things that are being done with paint and old records. Media recognition for this innovative show includes The Art Of Rebellion 2 and Stencil Nation, and features in numerous international street art magazines and blogs. In 2005 Klutch, the founder and curator of VK, had the room that he decorated with painted records for San Francisco’s Hotel Des Arts featured in Time magazine.

Unfortunately this will be the LAST Vinyl Killers.
