Brooke Weeber is a Portland-based illustrator who brings whimsical, nature-based scenes to life. Her complex pieces combine animals with instruments, ribbons with clouds and always feature her iconic subtle color palate and playful aesthetic. Brooke finds her inspiration from various natural landscapes as well as Greek and Native American culture. She started drawing when she was a young thing, but started focusing on it in high school and later in college. After receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Oregon in 2003, Brooke flew her native Northwest for the big city, where she focused on her other passion – professional baking. She received a degree in Professional Pastry Baking at the French Culinary Institute of New York in 2005 and worked as a high-end cake decorator immediately. Craving more trees and more drawing space, Brooke packed up her apartment and re-rooted herself in Portland in 2009. She’s been cranking out pieces ever since and has had shows locally at Mississippi Studios, the Farm, and Tribute Gallery. She’s pleased as punch to be on her bike, thinking of pictures and what kind of cake to make for her next friend’s birthday.

April Coppini artApril Coppini is an artist based in Portland, Oregon, who primarily works in charcoal on paper. Her high contrast, beautifully composed style is among the most distinctive and recognizable in the city. April has new work on display regularly in a range of different spaces. The enormous drawing of a rooster which is on permanent display in Lincoln (N. Williams) is a great example of her work although her subject matter has grown to incorporate an impressive variety of beings beyond the bantam.

The series on display at antler focuses on birds and insects.

We will be serving wine and baked goods courtesy of Black Sheep Bakery.

Year of The Rabbit

year of the rabbit by neil m. perry
A solo-show of new work by Neil M. Perry at Screaming Sky Gallery (1416 NE Alberta St.)

2011 has been the year of the Rabbit. In my most recent series of drawings and paintings the White Emperor watches over his Kingdom and the recently deposed wolves are banished to the dark outer-reaches.
We live in a complex world that has a skewed perception of meritocracy and occasionally no use for it at all. Tyrannical oligarchy has replaced democracy and the decisions that affect our lives are being heavily influenced, if not decided absolutely, by the super rich. Elected officials are a puppet show and it appears we may have been safer running with wolves than sitting among the rabbits. Art reflecting life, whatever next?
