First Thursday, July 7th, 2011 @ Backspace Gallery
We are proud to have 2 amazing artists showing work at the gallery!

Joshua Mays, originally from Denver, Co. but has been a nomadic artist for sometime now.
He has an eye for the balance of realistic characters, mixed with abstract and other worldly flow like no other!
Doing a range from canvas work, to album covers, to murals and much more… his vision is in full blast, and not stopping any time soon.

Meagan Spendlove is from San Francisco. You might know of her thru her graffiti moniker Siloette.
She has the smoothest flow of color and line work, almost looking like stained glass at times.
Strong emotional Characters dance between organic shapes and color, creating a color explosion for the senses.

both will be showing new paintings at the gallery, and we’ve got some plans for a wall or 2 to be hit during their visit!

*Both artists will be in attendance.

This is one not to miss portland!!

Students Find a Voice for Africa Through Street Art

PinterestFacebookTumblrEmailShare

The Grassy Knoll Gallery presents KNOW POWER: Street Art for Social Change.

Join us to celebrate the enlightenment of young minds, experience the empowerment of artful learning, and explore the impact of street inspired
art for change. Jackson Middle School students present a night of art for awareness, as they present their graffiti interpretations of conflict in Africa. These
perceptive adolescents have spent the month of April examining the roots and results of conflict in Africa, the origins of graffiti and how it can be used to promote social and political awareness.

Aden Catalani, a renowned street artist, has guided students in their use of stencils and spray paint, bright washes of color and organic textures to create vibrant gems of self expression and empowerment.

All profits from the students’ masterpieces will go to the African charity that students choose as a solution to the conflicts they’ve studied (TBA).

here’s a bit about Steven Lopez:
Steven Lopez has always been fond of art. His earliest childhood memories are sprinkled with colorful murals around Boyle Heights. After high school Lopez made a choice to move out of state and attend the University of Oregon. He graduated in 2000 with a B.A. in Fine Arts.

With guidance and encouragement from friends, professors and classmates, Lopez began sharing his art with the public. This period of his life cultivated life long relationships that inspire his work to this day.

Early on Lopez discovered that Jazz, Funk, Soul and Blues seemed to be ingrained into his very being. Not only did these influences release his creativity, they brought his unique contemporary urban style to life. You can see this in every facet of his creativity. Lopez’s work has been featured with Reebok, Nestle, Dunkin’ Donuts, Coachella, Pepsi, United Way, and Spy Optic. Noted celebrities that have worked with him include Erykah Badu, Akon and Jill Scott. He has also made appearances on Fuel TV, BBC and the Discovery Channel.

Lopez’s work is inspired by relationships he cultivates with people, music, and art. What he learns from life’s experience is the foundation of his work. His formula is and always will be story, substance and then style.

Hope to see everyone out and about for this amazing March first thursday event!!
