emek poster

Emek has been referred to as “The Thinking Man’s Poster Artist”. Coming from a unique family of 5 artists, Emek has made his mark creating special limited edition silkscreen posters for live concerts around the world. Emek’ style thrives on attention to detail, coupled with layers of meaning in the artwork. His infusion of socio-political commentary into pop culture imagery has made his work instantly recognizable in the field. Emphasizing craftsmanship, his work is mostly hand-drawn in the tradition of the classic psychedelic posters from the 1960′s. Born in the 70′s Emek was also strongly influenced by the DIY punk flyers of the 80’s.  ”I appreciate the creative freedom this medium allows me because the bands generally give me total freedom as long as I advertise the show info. I am allowed to dip into the recesses of my imagination and see what spills out onto the page. This allows me to be my own art director and I am able to experiment with different concepts and styles to keep things fresh. Today’s disposable culture paves the way for tomorrows collectible nostalgia…I’m just trying to make it interesting” Over the last 2 decades, Emek has created hundreds of posters for some of the top alternative bands and events, like Radiohead, Coachella, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, System of a Down, Jane’s Addiction, The Flaming Lips, to name a few, as well as album covers from Neil Young and Pearl Jam to Henry Rollins and Erykah Badu. Emek’s work has been shown in galleries across the United States, Berlin, London, Tokyo, Belgium and Canada. He has been interviewed on CNN, featured in dozens of magazines and books, including covers of Juxtapoz magazine.

Codak/Adam Smith First touched earth in Oklahoma, received misinformation and mis-education in Oregon, followed family roots from the NW throughout the mid-west, currently back on the left-coast in Los Angeles. From a family background in design, Codak developed a fascination with ‘line’… its quality, ambiguity and emotion. Associated with early experiences doodling his favorite comic book characters, falling off his skateboard and riding the bus, he would find himself drawn to Graffiti and it’s artistic interaction with the urban landscape. His work is defined by an acute sense of how to exploit space & composition in an organic fashion while maintaining a constructed approach utilizing mixed media. His subtle use of color intermixed with line work has been described as resembling “muscle stretched across bone” and “Malevolent Ivy” creating harmonious contrasts between graphic design and street art. Though he is better known in the world of ‘Street Art’ his work spans across fields, as he pulls from his childhood exposure to architecture, modern art, and interior design contrasted against his training in graphic design. Recent client work includes: NOKIA, The Sanrio Corporation (Hello Kitty), MGA Entertainment, Pepsi Street Motion, Fat Possum Records and DUB Magazine, as well as exhibitions in locations as diverse as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Washington DC, Montreal, London and Slovakia.Cans have been emptied, brushes abused, markers overfilled, pencils broken, buff paint spilled, computer screens burned out, hard drives fried…….Still in hot pursuit of progression.

Eyeone is a visual artist and graphic designer based in Los Angeles.
He holds an MFA in Design | Media Arts from the University of
California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is a member of the graffiti art
collective Seeking Heaven. Eyeone publishes the acclaimed Lost |
Graffiti in the City of Angels, a documentary journal dedicated to
Los Angeles visual culture.
He say’s about his work “I aim to present a vision of the city that is subjective and
paradoxically documentary in nature. Inhabiting this vast urban chaos
leads me to explore and find humanity amongst the wire, cement, and
smog.”

Gabe Decker was born and raised in the SF bay area…..affected early on by the totems left by the bay area’s graffiti pioneers..POEM VOGUE KRUSH TWIST UB40 JA… just to name a few……the awareness of style through form and color was seeded  …. ever since Gabe has been referencing these masters in his work and art. this collection represents an ongoing experiment with the development and evolution of style and the struggle between order and chaos.
Gabe Decker

J.shea was born and raised in Boston, MA….influenced at an early age by the art found in comic books….animation…and classic sci-fi film…..luckily the streets of his fair city were littered with punk rock posters and hand bills that covered telephone poles and record shop walls…..a constant reminder of the local music scene of the 80’s & early 90’s proved to be very inspirational as well……………after refining his skills at the art institute in the late 80’s…Shea’s creative career has spanned over 20 years….working in various forms as a poster artist….animator…..
sneaker designer…….puppet fabricator……muralist……and installation artist after living in many cities on the east and west coasts, ingesting an array of influences along the way………Shea has been focusing on his personal art…..the work is always handmade in mixed media….with a recycled twist…..combining influences of folk art, assemblage art , and all forms of street art……Shea exhibits his work in galleries and installation spaces across the country and just had his first international exhibition in Sydney, Australia…..he can be found working in his studio & riding his bike in the city of Portland, OR………….
J. Shea

Racecar13 / Tanner Goldbeck was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1970… He grew up on the east coast and moved around for several years. Baltimore, New Jersey… a couple spots in between. In 1992 Tanner graduated from The Maryland Institute College of Art. Later on, he attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1996 and eventually moved to Santa Barbara in 1998. He is currently paying bills in downtown Los Angeles. Working freelance and dodging the landlord whenever possible. Tanner’s 1st job in California was with Powell Skateboards. he got to work with people he grew up inspired by. Deck art had always been a huge influence on the work that he does now. Tanner has been able to work in the commercial art biz with several companies that have allowed him some creative freedom to do the skulls and monsters he’s always been into. Most recently, Icon Motosports based in Portland, Oregon. Along the way, Tanner has been able to make paintings and mess with other media to keep the line art process up and running. The move out west has been a great catalyst to re up new works. Tanner has been able to stick his nose in group shows and meet most of the artists and gallery people that get things done these days. It is a never ending process that one day will lead to solo shows and total world domination… or at least a peaceful spot to rest his brain after all this chaos is over. Racecar 13 is the evolving project in the back of Tanner’s brain. In short summary, the art is always up for interpretation.
Influences cover and endless art gamut from many grat master painters to the people that hit the walls around Traction Ave. There is a de!nite interest in experimenting with iconic images and !nding new ways to reconstitute them. To twist the familiar and o#er up something possibly a little di#erent. The worst reaction an artist can ever get is no reaction.

Chuck Bloom, David Stein, Keenan Havens & Michael Fields: art opening @ Goodfoot

PinterestFacebookTumblrEmailShare

Last Thurs, April 29th from 4-11pm.  Up until May 25th, 2010

The artists this month are Chuck Bloom, David Stein, Keenan Havens & Michael Fields
The goodfoot: 2845 SE Stark Portland, OR 97214
open daily 4-2:30

Chuck Bloom say’s about his work “Before the painting is finished, the vision is already fading to memory.  I can only hope that I’ve understood enough of the message to help me further along this tiresome trek.  Most of the time these “visions” are not complete – just bits and pieces of things, like symbols.  The paintings themselves are very organic in nature.  They all stem from my established visual vocabulary, but evolve in ways that are not premeditated or even foreseeable.  In this way, I work very closely to André Breton’s notion of automatism, which he believed must be present in works of art or writing in order for it to remain in the sphere of Surrealism.  It is mandatory as a Surrealist that artwork explore a mental space outside the field of normal awareness, in a place where consciousness, unconsciousness and all things possible and impossible exist as one.  At the nexus of my work is a concern and philosophy about the environment and man’s place in it.  Global warming, overpopulation and the breakdown of basic human communication and the resulting “fractured humanity” we endure are at the forefront of my concerns; however, elements beyond my conscious knowing seep in. Many elements in my paintings are of the seemingly familiar or mundane, but evade a total accessibility and a clearly defined meaning.  In this way I speak in a kind of “visual metaphor,” or perhaps what some have called “enigmatic poetry.”  Doorways and windows are passages from the outside to the inside, from one place to another, that is their definition and I use them no differently.  They can be bricked or boarded up, open to darkness, a stormy horizon, an idyllic interlude or even a source of water for things in one world from another.  Depending on how they are depicted they can represent the hope of another unspoiled world or a reminder of what is left behind or avoided.  They are opportunity or the lack of opportunity.  Opening the windows of minds, tearing open the locked doors of our rationalism creates endless possibilities for the future of humanity.  This manipulation of subject matter is natural and balanced.  Ultimately, the psychological state of events is for you, the viewer, to extrapolate – the results of which you may find you least expected. My ultimate goal is to walk right into one of my canvases and never return, but the door opens and the door closes in a blink of the eye.  The barriers are endless and the map I followed getting here is torn and unreadable.  Perhaps I’ve pretended to know where I was all along just to feel more comfortable, but it doesn’t make it any less real”

David Stein was born in Chicago and grew up in the Midwest.  He is a self-taught artist, and inspired by an overactive imagination.  David’s childhood plays a strong role in some of the more recognizable qualities of his drawing and painting style, such as the reoccurrence of fantastical creatures, anthropomorphic animals and his attention to fine detail.  He say’s about this body of work entitled “Can You Fake A Smile?  or A Series of Friendly Interactions With Pazuzu” “This particular body of work follows a series of friendly interactions where the negative internal dialogue and thoughts of the characters are exposed.  When I was younger I was told that there were chemicals in the water of our public pool. When activated by urine the chemicals would turn into a dark purple cloud and surround the culprit. It’s kind of like that. Only in this series I’ve replaced the dark purple cloud with snakes. To an untrained scout many snakes may appear to look similar, however, the results of their bite differ dramatically. Much like our words and thoughts. Even the seemingly harmless ones could strangle the weak.”

When Keenan Haven approaches a new drawing, he starts by planting a circle in the void of the picture plane. Using this circle, Keenan begins to add on drawings, slowly building the image. He works without an end product in mind. Instead, he is engaged in a constant interaction with the piece, trying to assess what the next step is. The image is finished when he deems it to be complete. When working on an image that is not preconceived, the artist is given absolute freedom. Yet Keenan finds himself following a set of standards and rules that he unconsciously impose upon himself, causing each image to hold a familiar quality to the last. Keenan interpret this familiarity as a clue into his own state of consciousness. Each and every choice he makes within his images comes to reflect a certain unconscious thought process that he engaged in at that moment, and the more frequent he makes the same choices, the more it suggests to be a significant part of his being. The images Keenan have created in the past and the images he has create in the present share a strong familiarity, yet slowly shift in such elements as subject matter, compositional preferences and image flow. These qualities of his images are reflective of  his progression through time, and the simultaneously unchanging and fluctuating manner of his own consciousness.

Michael Fields is a self-taught artist based in Portland, Oregon. His work is the product of personal reflection.. “When I paint, I contemplate the world as I know it: situations and people of past, present and future come into focus and it is my reaction to these concepts that dictates what emerges onto the canvas.” Michael’s work is born not of planned composition, but inner dialog, often challenging the viewer to decipher messages both on the surface and buried deep within it’s structure.
