Papergirl Portland 2011

PinterestFacebookTumblrEmailShare

Papergirl is an all-inclusive participatory, analogue, non-curated, and impulsive art distribution project for artists and enthusiasts. It is intended to take art distribution out of the galleries and into the streets, via direct delivery to the public in the style of American paperboys.

Papergirl is currently taking submissions, and will do so until August 19th 2011, the project’s launch date. After the deadline date distribution begins. Pieces are distributed in rolled and banded stacks of ten to fifteen pieces indiscriminately, to passers-by on the street, in an effort to broaden the public’s consciousness of local artists and to give artists a wider, more liberated venue to exhibit themselves.

The project was founded in Berlin by Aisha Ronniger and has been carried out every year since 2006. Since then, the project has made a transatlantic migration to the United States and captured the attention of artists throughout the country. Papergirl was brought to Portland in 2009 by Abraham Ingle and received more than two hundred submissions.

This year, Papergirl will be orchestrated by Steven Schwab and Stephanie Hatten, a Papergirl veteran. It will consist of three events: an initial exhibition of featured submissions, followed by distribution, and finally a concluding party. The ending event will commemorate all contributors who donated their effort and time to the project.

August 19th – Submission Deadline

August 26th – Exhibition at the Tracey Gallery on 6th & Everett at the Everett Station Lofts

September 3rd – Distribution!

Nyree Watts

Errata Gallery is pleased to announce “Sight + Smell” featuring new work by photographer Nyree Watts on February 4th to February 28th, 2010.

Opening Reception: First Thursday
February 4th, 6-10 pm

Featuring new works by Portland photographer Nyree Watts, “Sight plus Smell” explores the fluid, osmotic relationship between image, memory, and smell. Landscapes and images may evoke memories and smells of childhood or distant experiences, their recollection yielding a joy and pleasure perhaps not even present at their origin. Simultaneously, drifting smells can conjure up and project scenes from travel or images of old on the inner eye. Using old school techniques to express her modern sensibility. All of Nyree’s images are photographed from film, using hand processing and printing from various cameras, including pinhole, plastic, 35mm, and medium format. In her work she stretches boundaries and sees beyond images in ways that create wonder, juxtaposed with a certain stillness. To some they may evoke loneliness, while others see hope, thus her images are three dimensional, emotional, and spiritual to the viewer… they hold your hand or let it go in a slow motion dreamscape.

Nyree Watts is a visual artist who has been creating beautifully striking photographic images for the past 15 years. She studied art and photography at San Francisco State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998. After completing her B.A., Nyree combined her love for music and art by becoming the house photographer for the Badman Recording Company. Nyree’s body of work consists of over 20 CD and book covers, including work for Sun Kil Moon (mark Kozelek) and his label Caldo Verde. She has created and exhibited multimedia shows of her images, touring with singer/songwriters Lisa Cerbone and Robert Deeble. She is currently working on a cookbook incorporating her imagery.

Nyree has been described as “one of the most skilled photographers in Portland…whether she’s shooting stark, eerie landscapes or the neighbor’s cat, her images are always gorgeous and haunting.”

To further incorporate the senses, A cooking demonstration by local chef Bronwen Jones of local business “Flavour Pals” will be held in the gallery later in the month in conjunction with the show.

“Sight + Smell” will remain open until February 28th 2010.

Errata Gallery is located at 328 NW Broadway, #115 at the Everett Station Lofts in Portland, OR. Gallery hours are First Thursdays, Saturdays 12 to 4 PM, and by appointment. For more information, call 503.504.1851.

The two have also collaborated over the years to create mixed media artworks combining photography, collage, painting & found objects. Mill’s lonely photographic landscapes & cityscapes are often invaded by Shea’s religious iconography, punk rock sensibilities and ghostly figures. While Mills has been photographing live music performances in tiny clubs to big name venues for 15 years, Shea has been a rock poster artist for the legendary Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco for the past 13 years. Both artists have produced countless editorial work for numerous publications over the years, exhibit their personal art internationally and are original members of the infamous “Haley Collective” an artist collective formed in Southern California in the late 90′s.
