“Sky Soup” at Errata Gallery

“Sky Soup” art show and auction to benefit Clackamas County Children’s Commission Head Start.

First Thursday Opening: May 6th, 2010 5 -1 0 pm

In recognition of National Children’s Mental Health Day, Errata Gallery and local artist Kendra Binney are partnering with the Head Start program to bring you a unique collaborative art event. Featuring collaborations with over 40 preschool aged children, the event will showcase a view of the sky, and all the shapes that it holds, through the eyes of a child. Using an innovative form of collaboration, Kendra incorporates the students’ creative, often silly and surprisingly complex characters into her own recognizably stylized worlds. Mounted on wood, and covered in resin. The finished pieces are intricate mixes of childhood visions and storytelling, and Kendra’s sweet unsettling landscapes.

Kendra’s work has been shown and sold around the world, as well as published in various books and publications. Through scenes of dripping landscapes and insecure displaced characters, she illustrates a world draped in memories, remorse, and fragile realities. Seen through pastel washes and shiny candy coatings of resins, they evoke both contempt and hope. At once gentle and cruel, sweet and unsettling, they resonate a playful yet haunted quality. Along with her work as a full time artist, Kendra works frequently with children; as a resident artist in a private preschool, and a part time mentor and tutor for elementary school children and homeless youth.

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is a day to promote positive youth development, resilience, and recovery for children with mental health needs. The goal is to raise awareness of effective programs for children’s mental health needs, demonstrate how children’s mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery, and resilience; and show how children with mental health needs can thrive in their communities.

Clackamas County Childrens Commission Head Start is a non-profit organization that serves 3 and 4 year-old children of low-income families residing in Clackamas County. Head start does not charge any fees. They provide quality pre-school education, nutritious meals, regular health screenings, mental health staff and support, and family services and resources.
All work from the show is available for sale starting at just $30! There will also be a silent auction, raffle, and other gift items available for purchase. Wine and light snacks served.

100% of proceeds from this event will go to Clackamas County Children’s Commission Head Start. Funds will be used to purchase much needed support play therapy services and supplies for low income preschoolers in the program.

“Foolish Care” new works by Jennifer Mercede at Errata Gallery

Jennifer Mercedes at Errata Gallery in PortlandOpening reception: First Thursday, April 1st, 2010 from 6 – 10 pm

We are pleased to present for our April exhibition the spontaneously colorful works of Portland painter Jennifer Mercede. A small snapshot of her career as a painter, muralist, and illustrator, “Foolish Care” is an insight into the evolution of Jennifer’s art. Incorporating new techniques, colors, and mediums, the work showcases her progression as an artist and the haphazard perfection of her work. The pieces are new and different, but always spontaneous, cheerful, and honest.

Jennifer Mercede will be featured on OPB’s “Oregon Art Beat” this month! The episode airs March 24th. Get a glimpse of her process, style, and technique. Then come see some of her playful works in person.

Work on display through April 2010

“Influence” call for artists

Influence at Errata Gallery“Influence” call for artists

“Social networks are intricate things of beauty. They are so elaborate and so complex—and so ubiquitous, — that one has to wonder what purpose they serve. Why are
we embedded in them? How do they form? How do they work? How do they affect us?”
- Nicholas Christakis (“connected”)

Errata gallery is seeking artists to begin a process based art project . Inspired by the idea of how real life social networks influence our ideas, emotions, and behaviors, “Influence” is an experiment to create a visual representation of how we’re affected by the people we know, their friends’, their friends’ friends, their friend’s friend’s neighbor, their friend’s friend’s neighbor’s brother’s girlfriend’s co-worker’s second cousin … etc. etc..

The project will work similar to a chain letter but without the creepy pyramid format or threats of bad luck . I need to find some artists who are willing to start the project by beginning a painting or drawing (will have precut wood provided) and then pass it on to another artist to work on it, who will in turn pass it along to another artist they know. The artwork will be passed around in this manner for the month of February. There are no limits or minimums of how many people it can pass to, as long as it’s returned to the gallery or scheduled for pickup by the 1st of March. It could be 2 or it could be 20. There will also be a few pieces sent out with no set deadline, only instructions to return them when they are “finished”. Information and instructions will be included on the backs.

The final pieces will be displayed at Errata Gallery for the first Thursday opening in March, and remain up throughout the month. All artwork will be available for sale at a fixed price, with 90% of the proceeds divided among the artists. (10% will help offset costs of promotional materials etc.) Keep in mind that this is meant to be an experiment and hopefully a fun, thought provoking, and inspirational project. A final piece from a collaboration of 10 artists that sells for $100 will be a whopping $9 per person, so it’s obviously not gonna make anyone rich. Keep this in mind when working on the piece. Ideally people will be interested in the idea and excited to work on it and keep it going, but investing a couple hours or so and then passing it along to someone else is fine. Likewise, taking 2 weeks to accurately convey your style is also fine, but please remember that work needs to be back at the gallery on the 1st of March. There are no limitations on medium, format, etc. If you want to include photography, collage, or 3d elements you’re welcome to do so.

There will be a space on the back to include your contact info / website / etc. Participating artists will be given credit for their work on display and mentioned in press and show promotions. Because of the nature of the project, please realize that direct evidence of your own work may be lost within the collaboration, but that it will undoubtedly influence the layers of work above it. Also please take into consideration the possibility that some work will not find it’s way back to the gallery. All finished work we do receive will become property of the gallery. Work that does not sell during the show may remain on display in other parts of the gallery or shown in other exhibition spaces as the curator sees fit.

Materials will be available for pickup in the gallery on February 1st, 2010 from 3 – 10 pm. Return date is scheduled for Monday March 1st from 5 -10pm

Please email if you are interested in getting the project started. info@erratagallery.com

“Sight + Smell” at Errata Gallery with Portland Photographer Nyree Watts

Nyree Watts

Errata Gallery is pleased to announce “Sight + Smell” featuring new work by photographer Nyree Watts on February 4th to February 28th, 2010.

Opening Reception: First Thursday
February 4th, 6-10 pm

Featuring new works by Portland photographer Nyree Watts, “Sight plus Smell” explores the fluid, osmotic relationship between image, memory, and smell. Landscapes and images may evoke memories and smells of childhood or distant experiences, their recollection yielding a joy and pleasure perhaps not even present at their origin. Simultaneously, drifting smells can conjure up and project scenes from travel or images of old on the inner eye. Using old school techniques to express her modern sensibility. All of Nyree’s images are photographed from film, using hand processing and printing from various cameras, including pinhole, plastic, 35mm, and medium format. In her work she stretches boundaries and sees beyond images in ways that create wonder, juxtaposed with a certain stillness. To some they may evoke loneliness, while others see hope, thus her images are three dimensional, emotional, and spiritual to the viewer… they hold your hand or let it go in a slow motion dreamscape.

Nyree Watts is a visual artist who has been creating beautifully striking photographic images for the past 15 years. She studied art and photography at San Francisco State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998. After completing her B.A., Nyree combined her love for music and art by becoming the house photographer for the Badman Recording Company. Nyree’s body of work consists of over 20 CD and book covers, including work for Sun Kil Moon (mark Kozelek) and his label Caldo Verde. She has created and exhibited multimedia shows of her images, touring with singer/songwriters Lisa Cerbone and Robert Deeble. She is currently working on a cookbook incorporating her imagery.

Nyree has been described as “one of the most skilled photographers in Portland…whether she’s shooting stark, eerie landscapes or the neighbor’s cat, her images are always gorgeous and haunting.”

To further incorporate the senses, A cooking demonstration by local chef Bronwen Jones of local business “Flavour Pals” will be held in the gallery later in the month in conjunction with the show.

“Sight + Smell” will remain open until February 28th 2010.

Errata Gallery is located at 328 NW Broadway, #115 at the Everett Station Lofts in Portland, OR. Gallery hours are First Thursdays, Saturdays 12 to 4 PM, and by appointment. For more information, call 503.504.1851.
