Bonnie Meltzer: A Portrait of Recycling
March 5th – April 28th, 2011
Opening Reception at SCRAP, Saturday, March 5, 4:00-6:30pm
Artist demonstrations in the gallery, Saturdays, March 12th, 19th and 26th, 1:00-4:00pm
February 15, 2011 – Re:Vision Gallery is pleased to present the mixed media portrait
and sculpture work of Bonnie Meltzer.
The faces and figures on exhibit at Re:Vision Gallery span quite a few years and include
a few self portraits; in a sense the show is a portrait of the artist. The featured subject
matter, however, is the recycled materials themselves. Computer parts, globes, maps,
glasses, violins, CDs, wire, old clothes and buttons are presented not only as objects of
inspiration, but also as phrases in a vast symbolic, visual and verbal vocabulary. For
Meltzer, the appeal of using recycled materials is to keep them out of the landfill, but
the opportunities for symbolism and social relevance are what she truly finds irresistible.
The found-object portraiture in this show marries elements of social commentary and
personal history that have been consistent themes in Meltzer’ s work, and lend a deeper
purpose to the objects beyond mere form.
Meltzer will also be conducting artist demonstrations with the opportunity for audience
participation and observation three Saturdays in March. She will be making one of
her sculptures out of found objects from her collection and things from SCRAP.
Participation is open to anyone and is a unique opportunity to get ideas and learn
techniques for creating with recycled materials. The finished piece will be exhibited
during April until the close of the show.
Meltzer has exhibited and taught art all over the country. She first brought her work
to Oregon in 1971 and has been a positive force in the Portland art scene ever since.
She currently sits on the Portland Open Studios Board of Directors. Although she is
known for artwork made with computer parts, she is an equal opportunity recycler and
delights in the process of reinterpreting, redefining, and reshaping an object to achieve
metamorphosis.
