Faux Money Faux Problems

faux money
In Faux Money, Faux Problems, Gage Hamilton, Zach Yarrington and Stephan Alexandr work with FIFTY24PDX Gallery to create a concept show in response to the current financial climate. Gage questions the legitimacy of our financial institutions and our relationships with money through re-created scenes from The Alexander Hamilton Project peppered with reactions to the ensuing Occupy controversy, while Zach searches for a utilitarian alternative to the disheartening state of American politics, and Stephan poses a unique question of commodity value.

Faux Money, Faux Problems
opens First Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 from 6:00-10:00pm.
Come and enjoy seasonal beer courtesy of Red Hook and charcuterie from the Gorilla Meats Co. along with live DJ.

Gage Hamilton was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and received his BFA in Digital Arts / New Media along with a degree in Political Science from University of Oregon. With a notable history of social commentary through street installation work, his practice focuses on the triangular influence of money, sex and media on contemporary American culture.

Zach Yarrington grew up outside of Detroit before heading to Oregon in 2005 where he received his BFA in Digital Arts / New Media at University of Oregon. With his strong affinity for hand-drawn type, he finds inspiration in the rustic signage of a blue collar American city, the Pacific Northwest landscape, and his love of post-punx lyrics.

Stephan Alexandr was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. His fascination with materials can be seen in his work as Co-Founder and Creative Director of Sticks & Stones Accessories in which he pairs exotic woods, prehistoric ivories, and fossils with precious metals and stones.

JD White show at Gigantic gallery

jD White strips himself of clothing, pride and dignity once again with his new show at Gigantic gallery.

Gigantic gallery’s second show features new work from local artist jD White. My Boyfriend, jD White, Is Such An Asshole! New Work From Stephanie Padgett opens April 7th, 2011 at 6pm.

Portland Artist jD White is a narcissist, no questions asked. The new work at Gigantic, featuring two large photographs as well as two sculptures that depict personal aspects of jD’s life that many would rather he keep private, claims that Stephanie Padgett, jD’s girlfriend, is the author—but is this really the case?

“What can I say? It’s all about me. So much so that even if my girlfriend had a show, she would make it all about me as well. I’m also curious to see how the audience judges this work if they think a women is the artist.” –jD White

The work is nothing if not confrontational. His nude self-portraits borderline on pornographic, challenging the audience with large-scale, (40×50) photographs that at times depict him using drugs or masturbating. Other images explore his childlike behavior during his late 20′s, using pajamas as a signifier of childhood.

jD White graduated from Pacific Northwest College Of Art in 2008 with a BFA in Photography and is currently awaiting acceptance to Graduate school for an MFA. For more information on jD White and his work, please visit his website at jDWhitePhoto.com or email at jdwhitephoto@gmail.com.

Show is up till May 1st, 2011

“Sky Soup” at Errata Gallery

“Sky Soup” art show and auction to benefit Clackamas County Children’s Commission Head Start.

First Thursday Opening: May 6th, 2010 5 -1 0 pm

In recognition of National Children’s Mental Health Day, Errata Gallery and local artist Kendra Binney are partnering with the Head Start program to bring you a unique collaborative art event. Featuring collaborations with over 40 preschool aged children, the event will showcase a view of the sky, and all the shapes that it holds, through the eyes of a child. Using an innovative form of collaboration, Kendra incorporates the students’ creative, often silly and surprisingly complex characters into her own recognizably stylized worlds. Mounted on wood, and covered in resin. The finished pieces are intricate mixes of childhood visions and storytelling, and Kendra’s sweet unsettling landscapes.

Kendra’s work has been shown and sold around the world, as well as published in various books and publications. Through scenes of dripping landscapes and insecure displaced characters, she illustrates a world draped in memories, remorse, and fragile realities. Seen through pastel washes and shiny candy coatings of resins, they evoke both contempt and hope. At once gentle and cruel, sweet and unsettling, they resonate a playful yet haunted quality. Along with her work as a full time artist, Kendra works frequently with children; as a resident artist in a private preschool, and a part time mentor and tutor for elementary school children and homeless youth.

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is a day to promote positive youth development, resilience, and recovery for children with mental health needs. The goal is to raise awareness of effective programs for children’s mental health needs, demonstrate how children’s mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery, and resilience; and show how children with mental health needs can thrive in their communities.

Clackamas County Childrens Commission Head Start is a non-profit organization that serves 3 and 4 year-old children of low-income families residing in Clackamas County. Head start does not charge any fees. They provide quality pre-school education, nutritious meals, regular health screenings, mental health staff and support, and family services and resources.
All work from the show is available for sale starting at just $30! There will also be a silent auction, raffle, and other gift items available for purchase. Wine and light snacks served.

100% of proceeds from this event will go to Clackamas County Children’s Commission Head Start. Funds will be used to purchase much needed support play therapy services and supplies for low income preschoolers in the program.

Errata Gallery is located at 328 NW Broadway, #115 at the Everett Station Lofts in Portland, OR. Gallery hours are First Thursdays, Saturdays 12 to 4 PM, and by appointment. For more information, call 503.504.1851 or visit www.erratagallery.com

Mario Robert & Matt Schlosky

The Goodfoot will have an art opening June 25th, last Thursday, from 5-11pm.  The show will be up until July 28th, 2009.  The artists this month are Mario Robert & Matt Schlosky.

Mario Robert lll is an artist from El Paso Texas and a fourth generation carpenter inspired by comic books, movies and ancient civilizations.  Using the wood’s own grain and knots, he first develops the main idea of the painting. He then paints and sometimes carves the wood and is able to convert his simple materials into stunning art pieces. Each piece is an explosive colorful experience. Following the Mexican day of the dead folklore, he begins to add his new take on a very old tradition of telling and creating new stories.

Matt Schlosky was born and raised in Rochester, NY. In December of 2005, he received a BFA in Industrial design from The Columbus College of art and Design. After graduation Matt decided that painting was where his heart was, and that the design world wasn’t for him. Matt spent a year in the bay area painting and doing shows until July of 2008 when he landed in Portland. Matt’s artwork is inspired by comics, video games, graffiti, music, society, nature, ancient cultures, and the people he has met. He believes in his heart that art is what he is supposed to do, it’s been his mediation.

a little taste of the show.
