Buggin’ for some variety in your daily routine? Good:a gallery invites you to take a detour down N. Mississippi Avenue this June and check out the mix of artwork from an assortment of artists in the group show, June Bugs. Not all things are created equal, and – like the artwork on the walls – good:a gallery appreciates being a little different. Owned by artists for artists, this garage-turned-gallery strives to support the Portland art scene with frequent group shows and fun receptions where communities come together. It’s a pint-size gallery with a keg-size heart! Sure, we’re a little different on the outside…but like you, Good sees value in art and variety!

Brooke Weeber is a Portland-based illustrator who brings whimsical, nature-based scenes to life. Her complex pieces combine animals with instruments, ribbons with clouds and always feature her iconic subtle color palate and playful aesthetic. Brooke finds her inspiration from various natural landscapes as well as Greek and Native American culture. She started drawing when she was a young thing, but started focusing on it in high school and later in college. After receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Oregon in 2003, Brooke flew her native Northwest for the big city, where she focused on her other passion – professional baking. She received a degree in Professional Pastry Baking at the French Culinary Institute of New York in 2005 and worked as a high-end cake decorator immediately. Craving more trees and more drawing space, Brooke packed up her apartment and re-rooted herself in Portland in 2009. She’s been cranking out pieces ever since and has had shows locally at Mississippi Studios, the Farm, and Tribute Gallery. She’s pleased as punch to be on her bike, thinking of pictures and what kind of cake to make for her next friend’s birthday.

Consumption with Diana Crites and Erin Robinson Grant at Gallery 114
Gallery 114 is pleased to present a provocative new exhibition showcasing the work of contemporary Northwest artists, Diana Crites and Erin Robinson Grant. “Consumption,” a surreal exploration of rebirth through death, utilizes dolls, animation, and more traditional mediums to convey the inescapable nature of destruction and the challenge of rebuilding. Consumption will be on display at Portland’s Gallery 114 from June 7 through June 30, 2012, with opening festivities on Thursday, June 7.
Exhibiting artists Diana Crites and Erin Robinson Grant share an appreciation for many of life’s darker inevitabilities. The themes of self-destruction, metamorphosis, and death figure largely throughout their independent work, so exhibiting together under a common theme was intuitive. And it proved inspirational. In Consumption, their art continually intersects — even uniting in projected animations– before reaching different, and sometimes startling, conclusions.
Employing many vehicles – including dolls, video installation, oil painting and illustration – the artists attempt to communicate the multi-faceted nature of consumption. Through conceptual narratives of memory, desire, and decay, a common thread is formed: that although consumption is inherently destructive, it is also an inevitable step towards progression and rebirth.
Regarding the theme of consumption, Erin Robinson Grant states, “It conveys decay, destruction, and a necessary use of a limited material. No other word so beautifully captures the constant struggle of humanity to survive in both physical and philosophical terms.” Adds Diana Crites, “Consumption, for me, is about an unwitting trip to places you don’t want to go; and, having gotten irrevocably lost, the struggle to get somewhere new. In the end, sometimes you have to waste away to find yourself.”
Consumption runs from June 7 through June 30, 2012 at Gallery 114, in Portland’s Pearl District. Please join them on Thursday, June 7, from 6-9 pm for the exhibition opening and artist reception. Gallery 114 participates in “First Thursday” festivities, previewing art exhibitions showing at downtown art galleries. In conjunction with Consumption, Gallery 114 will present, “A Theory of Morbid Attraction: An Artist Talk” by Erin Robinson Grant on Saturday, June 16, from 1-2 pm in the gallery. Gallery 114 is located at 1100 NW Glisan, Portland, Oregon 97209. Admission is free and open to the public.

Gallery 114 is the only established gallery in Portland that has persisted in allowing its artists absolute artistic freedom throughout its 20-year history. Founded in 1990 as an artist collective, Gallery 114 and its members have consistently produced a diversity of artwork.

Lulu’s Vintage is proud to host an art show for the month of June featuring 4×6 inch postcard-size hand-printed woodcuts and original watercolor & ink illustrations by artist Carye Bye of Red Bat Press. Her love of Portland has been a theme in her printmaking over the last decade and in the illustrated guidebook Hidden Portland she self published in 2009 and Bedouin Books published in 2010. Janet Julian, a local musician and folksy artist refers to Carye as a “Tourist in her own town”. What is more touristy than the postcard!
Bye has collected postcards most of her life. Her grandparents in Florida sent her alligator, shell collections, and cute kitten and puppy postcards to Minnesota where she grew up. In high school she started her first reproduction printing by making a variety of zines which she’d sell to friends. One zine The Bizzare focused on different subject matters and the fourth issue was all about bathtubs. This launched a collection of postcards with bathtubs. Today Bye curates the informal Bathtub Art Museum with a collection of nearly 400 “bathtub” postcards. Her interest in postcards has continued in her professional arts life.
Through Red Bat Press, a small artist press Bye started in 2002 that specializing in woodcut illustration and hand printing on a letterpress, a tradition of making Portland Postcards has emerged. The popular Bridges of the Willamette, a collection of 10 woodcut reproductions of Portland’s unique bridges, is one of Bye’s signature contributions. Other Portland scenes in the collection so far include, Paul Bunyan, Vaux Swifts, Union Station, Chinatown, Stag Sign, City of Roses and many bicycle prints.
In this new exhibit, Bye will illustrate her favorite public art sculptures and architecture in woodblock and Ink & watercolor. This includes a new carving of the Steel Bridge in honor of Steel Bridge’s 100th Birthday this summer.
For spring APAK will be celebrating the reemergence of life with a series of new limited edition prints! All prints are numbered and signed, giclee prints using archival ink on acid-free cotton rag paper.
