Undertow: Testing the Waters

PinterestFacebookTumblrEmailShare

Nemo HQ is proud to present the work of local artists, Undertow in “Testing The Waters,” curated by NEMO opening Friday, June 4, 2010 6-10 pm.

“Testing The Waters” is the debut art show for three best friends and former college classmates who share the same passion for art, design, and ground beef tacos. Since moving to Portland a little over two years ago, all three artists have collaborated to create an art collective that serves as a creative outlet for their graphic style and subject matter. That art collective became Undertow: three aquatic-based creatures that are visual representations of each artist’s personalities and interests. The art and design in “Testing The Waters” features not only the experiences, inspirations, and commentary of the artists, but also a collaboration with the Jordan Brand to give back to a local charity. 100% of the proceeds for select pieces will be matched by the Jordan Brand and donated to St. Mary’s Boys Home.

Name of artist – George Perrou

Title of Event? – “Shipwrecks of Sparta”

Description of event? – ‘Shipwrecks of Sparta’ features Perrou’s trademark style of imagery inspired by the cartoons of his baby-boomer youth. Nostalgic for a time before video games and text messages, Perrou rekindles a childlike sense of wonderment in his paintings, recalling an era when encyclopedia pictures and TV’s Jacques Cousteau brought more questions than answers to the mysteries of dark ocean depths and their theft of cargo and trade ships. “The 1950′s and 60′s saw a rise in underwater discovery due to technological advances,” says Perrou, “and art based upon the bottles and other vessels which archeologists brought to the surface found their way into many contemporary homes of the era.”

Opening 1st Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 | 5-9 pm
The Original – A Dinerant in Portland, OR
.
300 SW 6th Ave. (in Downtown Portland)

Fine Art Photography of Vintage Roadside’s Jeff Kunkle
Dinosaurs & Diving Girls showcases art “created while traveling thousands
of miles a year” with wife and Roadside Vintage co-founder Kelly Burg, “criss-crossing the
country along old highways, seeking out and photographing whatʼs left of things built roughly
from the 1930s through 1960s,” Jeff says, “or before the age of the Interstate.” Many of the
places and things Jeff photographs were once a part of the everyday landscape – the mom & pop
ʻroadside cultureʼ of architecture, signs, and tourist attractions that have been pushed out
or pushed over by modern roads and a changing society. A commercially published photographer
whoʼs worked behind the lens for almost 30 years, Kunkle found his artistic voice with Vintage
Roadside, a company with the goal of documenting this disappearing part of our history.

RECESS welcomes you to collaborate. “Recess” invites you to participate.

PinterestFacebookTumblrEmailShare

RECESS Art Space is a brand new place to play in SE Portland. The very first show ever at RECESS will be… “Recess”. It’s not just for artsy types, because curator Tori Abernathy wants to make art available to everyone in the whole wide world—your mom, your dog, everyone. You’re supposed to be able to play sometimes, (some people say all the time), but where can you, how can you? The artists invited to help facilitate “Recess” have some ideas you can run with. In art-speak, we call you a collaborator, in this case. Together, we can explore the recesses of the mind, the vicissitudes of the economic recession, other permutations of the word “recess”, or just have some fun with good old-fashioned Americans like yourselves. But out-of-towners are welcome too. Everybody gets Recess!

The works at this show will be largely conceptual and participation-oriented. Of course there’s plenty of standing room, and what’s a spectacle without spectators? We all have to fit somewhere, and there’s plenty of room in the ground floor of The Artistery (that’s where RECESS is held). There’s going to be Soup and Comedy, at least for a portion of the night, there will be some live music later in the night, there will be videos, commentary, performance, and a pants exchange.

Tori Abernathy, et. al. is going to break down art borders at RECESS every month. The show is typically a one-night event, but you can check the website (recesspdx.blogspot.com) for any open hours, how to contact to schedule an appointment for viewing, and/or for more information at large. RECESS is on Facebook as well (search: Recess Gallery).
