Mother of God at Gigantic Gallery

Mother of God at Gigantic Gallery
This February Gigantic Gallery will be showing Mother of God — new work by five women on the subject of women in religious stories. Through painting, printmaking, illustration and collage, through figures reverent and allegorical and beastly, these artists reimagine the heroic narratives and canonized repercussions of women essential to the trajectory of our inherited mythos.

The show will feature new work by Claire Dannenbaum, Jasibe Cure-Twede, Jessica Johnson, Joanna Wecht, and Shannon Larson.

Please join us for the opening at 5:30-9:30pm, February 2. The show will run through February 26, 2012.

Faux Money Faux Problems

faux money
In Faux Money, Faux Problems, Gage Hamilton, Zach Yarrington and Stephan Alexandr work with FIFTY24PDX Gallery to create a concept show in response to the current financial climate. Gage questions the legitimacy of our financial institutions and our relationships with money through re-created scenes from The Alexander Hamilton Project peppered with reactions to the ensuing Occupy controversy, while Zach searches for a utilitarian alternative to the disheartening state of American politics, and Stephan poses a unique question of commodity value.

Faux Money, Faux Problems
opens First Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 from 6:00-10:00pm.
Come and enjoy seasonal beer courtesy of Red Hook and charcuterie from the Gorilla Meats Co. along with live DJ.

Gage Hamilton was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and received his BFA in Digital Arts / New Media along with a degree in Political Science from University of Oregon. With a notable history of social commentary through street installation work, his practice focuses on the triangular influence of money, sex and media on contemporary American culture.

Zach Yarrington grew up outside of Detroit before heading to Oregon in 2005 where he received his BFA in Digital Arts / New Media at University of Oregon. With his strong affinity for hand-drawn type, he finds inspiration in the rustic signage of a blue collar American city, the Pacific Northwest landscape, and his love of post-punx lyrics.

Stephan Alexandr was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. His fascination with materials can be seen in his work as Co-Founder and Creative Director of Sticks & Stones Accessories in which he pairs exotic woods, prehistoric ivories, and fossils with precious metals and stones.

The Curves + Lines Show

julie everhart letterpress
Tilde in Sellwood will host a First Friday reception for three papercraft artists from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Friday, February 3rd, 2012. The three individual artists choose paper as their medium of artistic expression for a variety of reasons—and, we know viewers will take delight in the unique, textured creations from all.

Tilde
7919 SE 13th Avenue
Portland, Oregon 97202

Julie Everhart, founder of Studio Olivine, is a letterpress artist living in Portland, Oregon who enjoys keeping her hands inky. She’s been drawing since she was old enough to hold a pen and continues to evolve and change her processes every day. Julie prints on wood, linen, and paper, using earth friendly methods and materials whenever possible. For her first collection of letterpress art prints, Julie focuses on the beauty of the ever-evolving process of life. Change is the theme, complete with bends and turns and additions of elements that have shaped the artist and her art into something new, complex, and beautiful. Pieces in this show are printed and pressed on handmade recycled paper, one color at a time with soy inks, and mounted onto bamboo.
katie kulper circleKatie Kulper is an Oregonian (born and raised), and Portland based artist/designer. She created multi-dimension paper sculptures for the current show with the notion that in seasons of sadness and brokenness, there is beauty to be found. Similar to a long season of rain and clouds, new growth and clear skies are the result. Katie notes that she’s experienced her fair share of rainy seasons, and each piece in the show represents one of the places where she’s shed and shared tears. The intensely emotional process in her creative thinking and artistic execution offer a beautiful result.
Marnie Karger artworkHailing from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Marnie Karger draws inspiration from the geography and history of the land around her as she reveres a sincere sense of place and home. Her unique artworks are created by carefully cutting and layering chromatically colored paper to represent depth maps of popular lakes, rivers, and coastlines. Each piece for the show is a handmade effort, reflecting attention to and appreciation of the beauty, mystery, and complexity of the contours beneath the surface of the water.

Located in Sellwood, Tilde hosts a revolving bi-monthly art show, with receptions on the First Friday of the opening month. Tilde, a modern lifestyle shop, offers a well-edited selection of women’s and men’s accessories, and home decorative items that are original creations by individual artists and design groups. Displayed in a home/gallery environment, each product sits near a designer’s statement to reveal the story behind each creation.

Show Ends: 2012-03-31

Sundries Serendade at Good:a Gallery

Micki Skudlarczyk

Good:a gallery starts the New Year off with a seductive instillation by artist Micki Skudlarczyk, entitled “Sundries Serenade”. Her work investigates the psychological and emotional realities surrounding the physical transition from life to death. This instillation asks the viewer to reconsider the nature of sundries, and the devalued and rejected parts of butchered animals slain for their higher-valued products. Paying homage to the parts that remain after life has passed and the dishes are cleared, “Sundries Serenade” makes special these “miscellaneous items of little value”. Hanging gently from a clothes line in the wallpapered room of the gallery, each part is washed, cared for and sung to with reverence. During the month of January, this free instillation can be viewed through the gallery windows located at 4325 N. Mississippi Ave. Good’s doors will finally open for a closing reception on Friday, January 27th, from 7pm to 10pm. Don’t miss this mellifluous instillation that transforms macabre sundries into magnificent remains of life’s offerings.
