“parts & pieces”

a new collection of paintings by Sarah Kamsler

opening reception Saturday night May 22, 2010

7pm – 10pm

Artists Statement

Using the landscape as a starting point, I paint my vision of the natural world and our relationship to it. Destruction is tempered by hope and regeneration. I aim for an overall sense of wary playfulness. The arrow-like tree shapes, geological forms and disjointed sticks suggest shapes and textures from nature, but are personified to reflect the struggles that we navigate as humans. Many paintings reflect simultaneously environmental and societal concerns. Deforestation, over development of land, human consumption, global warming, the domination of a leader, the patterns of migrating birds and a fascination with geology are all things driving my current work.

Why landscapes? The ground conceals our darkest secrets and our coveted delights. It’s our record of the way things were. The sky dances endlessly above us. Clouds take on the shapes of recognizable forms- taunting us with the possibilities of what could be. I delight in the merging of both ground and sky- that’s where we exist. Life is a continuous balancing act of past, present and future. The landscape is my attempt to metaphorically represent a snapshot of these ever-changing realities.

Bric a Brac, J Shea at Lyrik in PortlandMarch 19th – April 22nd, 2010

J. Shea solo exhibit @ lyrik on Friday night March 19th… the title of the show is “bric a brac”
the opening reception will begin at 7pm… and run till midnight or so… it should be a fun evening… they’ll have a special 100% all vinyl set by eddy paycheck… and a few other surprises…

“bric a brac” …is a new series of work by j.Shea , created and derived by rummaging through garage sales… flea markets and secondhand shops… often these collected objects are broken… lost… or forgotten… and the process of tracking them down and finding them is just as meticulous as the the work in the studio of reconfiguring them and breeding a new life into them… since relocating to Portland 2 year ago… Shea has been collecting these objects and immersing himself in the strange world of thrift store and flea market culture… finding inspiration not only in the items for sale but in the  people that create those environments like the vendors and the regulars… this new collection of work is created in various media… including sculpture……..carving…………assemblage work………….either freestanding… hanging… or in the artists familiar shadow box style… the new collection of work will remain on exhibit till April 22, 2010.
