A Group Show featuring original works visualizing the theme of Anxiety
WHEN: (First) Thursday, November 1st from 6pm-10pm (Show ends Dec. 1st, 2012)
WHERE: Pony Club Gallery
Pony Club Gallery is proud to present “HAUNTED”, a group show visualizing the variety of ways anxiety can envelop our thoughts and lives. Most of us must work hard (some of us harder than others) to keep our own madness at bay. Everyone experiences an assortment of burdens that have the potential to completely consume and dismantle their life. These worries can be trivial, imagined, and blown out of proportion by our own neurosis, or absolutely legitimate and threatening to our person. Either way, the complicated array of feelings oozing out from our worries are extremely real to the individual experiencing them.
However, anxiety is not something to be completely avoided and condemned. Fear can be a significant motivator to action and stimulant of creative thinking. It takes a solid imagination to dream up the elaborate labyrinth of dread a nervous mind builds for itself. Anxiety produces monsters of our own creation that occupy the darkest corners of who we are. Our fear causes us to shed light on the terrifying truths, situations, and creatures that haunt us and may not otherwise be exposed. They may be unnerving, but they are a powerful part of us.
The show, curated by Pony Club member Erin McCarty, is comprised of a small group of Portland artists including painters, sculptors, and illustrators. Each participating artist was encouraged to take the theme of anxiety loosely, and create work that resonated with them personally. This composes a show that is full of different ideas and imagery, but held together by a universal theme.
Now that Portlanders are fully submerged in fall with our city getting colder and darker, a show examining this theme seems appropriate. Come enjoy a glass of wine and revel in the the descending chill with some gorgeous local art made with all your worries in mind!
