For it’s second show, RECESS will be showing works pertaining to ways humans interact
socially in the light of technological influences, and how these interactions might be
shifting and developing in today’s cultural climate. [From the bio supplied by Amber
Case], she and others in this show examine “how our relationship with information is
changing the way cultures think, act, and understand their worlds.” Featured in this show
are photo works, video, installation, technological documentation, and real-time social
engagement pieces.

J.P. Huckins will be modifying his work with his Best Friends For A Day project, as
previously advertised on Facebook, to suit the limited time allotment for the show
opening; He will be available at the show to be any comers’ Best Friend For Ten Minutes.
Dane Overton has converted two monitors into cyborgs that will attempt to communicate
while observers can send them text messages to provoke or interrupt the conversation.
[Wow! How did he do that?]

Alicia Gordon, recent PNCA graduate, has taken posts from Craigslist’s “Casual
Encounters” section wherein users have requested [extremely] various [sexual]
encounters from which she has constructed narratives and illustrated them through
tableau photographs.

Tori Abernathy is presenting videos of meetings with strangers. No more can be said
about her project here, for the sake of preserving the element of surprise.
On a slightly different note, Cyborg Anthropologist, Amber Case, and PHP-
developer/GPS-enthusiast Aaron Parecki will be showcasing an exhibit reflecting their
work on Geoloqi.com, a solution to the paucity of quality social protocols regarding text-
messaging and way-finding. Case and Parecki recently presented Augmented Reality
using SMS and GPS at Portland’s Research Club, and have been invited to expound on
this presentation for RECESS.

Case currently works as a User Experience Designer at Vertigo Software. In 2010, she
was named by Fast Company Magazine as one of the Most Influential Women in Tech.
Aaron Parecki founded Geoloqi.com. Tori Abernathy is the director of RECESS. J.P.Huckins is an artist living, working and experiencing in Portland, OR. Alicia Gordon recently graduated from PNCA. Dane Overton is awesome.
