To Uganda, With Life is a benefit art show on March 4th, 2010 at 6pm at the In Flux Gallery of the Pacific Northwest College of Art at 1241 NW Johnson St. in the Pearl District. The show will consist of postcard-sized works (4×6″) of any medium and any theme. Each piece will be for sale on a sliding scale of $5-10, and all of the profits will go to LGBT Groups working in Uganda for their own human rights. The show will continue until March 11th at PNCA.
LGBT and HIV+ Ugandans are currently struggling with the Ugandan government’s 2009 proposal of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which broadens the already-existing criminalization of homosexuality. In its first draft, the proposed bill introduces the death penalty for those with previous convictions of homosexual activity, engage in homosexual activity with anyone under 18, or test as HIV+ and are suspected of homosexuality. The Anti-Homosexuality bill also extends to Ugandans living outside of the country and illegalizes a “failure to report” suspected homosexual activity. The bill is scheduled to be reviewed in the Ugandan Parliament in late February or early March and, if passed, will disrupt human rights for all Ugandans as well as Uganda’s LGBT/HIV+ population.
Submissions of 4×6″ artworks of any medium and any subject are being accepted for the show until February 24th. All submissions will be shown.
